born on 13 july 1740, monckton fourth son of john monckton, 1st viscount galway, although second second wife, jane westenra of rathleagh, queen s county, ireland. older half-brother robert monckton (1726–1782) became high ranking general officer in british army, later did nephew, henry, son of brother edward monckton, nabob , member of parliament. monckton s sister, mary, famous blue-stocking , later presided on important literary , political salon.


monckton commanded 45th foot 25 july 1771 until 1772. wounded @ battle of long island on 22 august 1776 while leading 1st grenadier battalion in army of sir william howe rank of lieutenant colonel. @ time of battle of trenton on 26 december 1776, served acting commander of major general james robertson s 1st british brigade @ new york city. after trenton disaster, took command of ad hoc brigade consisting of william medows 1st grenadier battalion, own 2nd grenadier battalion, , james ogilvie s 2nd guards battalion. leading force, went new jersey lord charles cornwallis , fought @ battle of assunpink creek on 2 january 1777. following day, george washington outmaneuvered british , defeated them @ battle of princeton. in aftermath, cornwallis made rapid retreat base @ new brunswick, new jersey.
