the story begins in wake of 4 lead-in limited series, superman, wonder woman, , batman feuding, jla watchtower destroyed, , heroes of world facing variety of menaces. on backdrop, kal-l (the earth-two superman), along earth-two s lois lane, earth-three s alexander luthor, , superboy-prime escape pocket universe had been left @ end of crisis on infinite earths. kal-l seeks out cousin, power girl, survivor of earth-two. believing lois health improve on native world, hopes replace current earth earth-two, considers perfect.


kal-l tries enlist batman s support, stating post-crisis earth s inherent bad nature caused batman s recent mistrust , hostility. batman refuses , tries use kryptonite ring, not native kal-l s universe fails , destroyed heat vision. afterward, batman learns superboy-prime destroyed jla watchtower.


alexander reveals power girl , superboy-prime had been leaving paradise time, manipulating events create inter-dimensional tuning fork. using anti-monitor s remains , captured heroes , villains attuned former universes (power girl among them after superboy-prime knocks out), alex restores earth-two, unpopulated except earth-two heroes transported there.


superboy-prime attacks conner kent, world s superboy. multiple super-teams intervene. superboy-prime accidentally kills several heroes before flashes , kid flash force him speed force, assisted speedsters within it. jay garrick, speedster left behind, says speed force gone.


seeking create perfect world, alexander restores many alternate earths. earth-two lois dies, , aggrieved kal-l , younger superman kal-el fight until wonder woman separates them. bart allen (wearing barry allen s costume , aged adulthood) emerges speed force, warning , other speedsters unable hold superboy-prime, returns wearing anti-monitor inspired armor stores yellow sun radiation empower him, making him stronger.


batman s strike force destroys brother eye, satellite ai created batman had gone rogue , begun transforming civilians nano-infused robots. alexander selects , merges alternate earths, trying create perfect world, until firestorm blocks efforts. conner, nightwing, , wonder girl release tower s prisoners. fighting each other, conner , superboy-prime collide tower, destroying it. multiple earths recombine new earth conner dies in wonder girl s arms. power girl arrives , asks kal-el happened lois. answer causes break down prompting ask kal-l why.


he answers simply, telling because chose wrong superboy condemn , wrong superboy condone.


when horde of supervillains attack metropolis, heroes, current , retired, fly off rescue. joined national guard. battle results in multiple deaths on both sides, including many superboy-prime himself, kills villains , heroes alike. during battle, superboy-prime takes off destroy oa, planning collapse universe, , recreate himself superhero. superboy-prime breaks through 300-mile thick wall of willpower created green lantern corps , kills thirty-two green lanterns before kal-l , kal-el carry him toward left of krypton. huge cloud of kryptonite. flying through krypton s red sun, rao, destroys superboy-prime s armor , causes 3 kryptonians powers diminish. falling sentient planet (and green lantern corps member) mogo, fight. kal-el knocks superboy-prime out , older superman kal-l dies of injuries in arms of cousin, power girl.


back on earth, batman, struggling superboy s death , nightwing s severe injuries sustained during metropolis battle, contemplates shooting alex. batman discouraged wonder woman. alex manages escape.


wonder woman, batman, , superman later meet in gotham city. wonder woman plans find out is. batman plans similar journey of self-discovery, revisiting training of youth, time dick grayson, healthier, , tim drake joining him. superman retires super heroics until powers return.


hiding in alley in gotham city , making new plans, alexander luthor found lex luthor , joker. joker deforms him spraying acid onto face, electrifies it, , finally, kills alexander shooting him lex mocks him making mistake of not letting joker play in secret society.


the green lantern corps imprison superboy-prime inside red sun-eater. series ends him carving s chest bare hands , declaring has escaped worse prisons this.
