chambers street–world trade center on ind eighth avenue line express station 4 tracks , 2 island platforms, in unusual layout: station has separate island platforms express , local trains. both island platforms can accommodate 600-foot (180 m) trains. there passenger connection between 2 platforms @ mezzanine level. passageway includes in-system transfer irt station. both platforms opened after midnight on september 10, 1932, did rest of ind eighth avenue line north inwood–207th street.


a late-1990s renovation saw prefabricated tile panels installed on trackside wall of express platform, tile band of concord violet bordered in black , chambers in white copperplate lettering on black tiles on each panel, , on local platform s walls new tiles installed in 3-foot 2-foot sections different shade of dark blue violet bordered in black; no station name captions placed. trim lines in entryways , passages use concord violet color rather blue violet.


chambers street

chambers street, express platform, through station. north of chambers street station third track between uptown , downtown express tracks, connecting switches @ both ends, used turn trains when chambers street used terminal, before broadway–nassau street (now fulton street) station opened on february 1, 1933. served , c trains. platform not wheelchair-accessible, although can possibly gain accessibility in future because elevator local platform leads mezzanine shared station. however, 1 block away chambers street station on irt broadway–seventh avenue line, wheelchair-accessible.


world trade center

an e train of r160 cars @ world trade center. former half-length side platform, passageway path station, can seen @ left.




world trade center, local platform, forms terminus of local service , offset south of express platform, @ northern edge of world trade center site. served e train. southbound local trains reach platform ramping underneath express tracks south of canal street station. northern end of world trade center station has signal tower , diamond crossover switch @ middle of through-platform.


the local tracks end @ bumper blocks @ south end of platform. in addition, there platform-level passageway on western side of station toward platform s south end, evidence of former half-length side platform western track; while in passenger use connection rest of station, former platform fenced off rest of local platform level, , passengers must use mezzanine access island platform. connection world trade center path station available @ station s south end; this, in turn, gives access fulton center (via dey street passageway), cortlandt street station of bmt broadway line, , future cortlandt street station on irt broadway–seventh avenue line.


the station formerly named hudson terminal or h&m, after nearby hudson terminal of hudson , manhattan railroad (now path). since 1973, station has been named after 2 world trade centers. wall tiles reading h , m remained on walls of world trade center station late december 1974, year after first world trade center completed. tiles painted over, since station s renovation, have been covered over.

the transfer between local platform , express platform available @ tips of both platforms, 2 platforms opposite each other few feet. passengers must walk down express platform southernmost staircase, go different part of mezzanine, crossover, , go down staircase northern end of local platform. complex transfer allow continued underground mezzanine outside of fare control southern end @ world trade center, 1 block west of fulton street station on ind eighth avenue line, northern street stairs @ chambers , church street, 1 block east of chambers street station of irt broadway–seventh avenue line. total length of mezzanine 7 blocks.

at extreme southern end of station exit cortlandt street station, along few high entrance-exit turnstiles (heets). platform ada-accessible, , in future, platform ada-accessible. doors , original ada-accessible ramp, structure first world trade center leading station, survived september 11 attacks. station not damaged, covered dust , subsequently closed. passageway reopened while provide ada-connection new york city subway station temporary world trade center path station, closed again when temporary path station closed reconstruction. passageway covered in plywood preservation purposes.


the renovated entrance, leading new york city subway station newly rebuilt path station s oculus headhouse westfield world trade center, opened on december 19, 2016. newly reopened passageway retained pre-9/11 design, save door on display has words matf 1 / 9 13 spray-painted on (a message urban search , rescue massachusetts task force 1 of beverly, massachusetts, searched world trade center site on september 13, 2001). there plaque above spray-painting, explaining message on door. path required preserve passageway s original design per section 106 of national historic preservation act, condition getting funding construct oculus , new stations. passageway not made ada-accessible again until 2017, there twenty-six steps down mezzanine oculus headhouse s lobby.


the mta s elevator local platform, @ southeast corner of church street , park place, connects local platform via long ramp main mezzanine shared chambers street, has been out of service 2001 2017 due long-term construction on current world trade center. elevator planned reopen in december 2017. in meantime, world trade center station not shown ada-accessible station on new york city subway maps.


future transfer cortlandt street

a free passageway @ southern end planned part of fulton center project, have allowed free transfer between local platform , southbound cortlandt street station. however, non-free transfer made using wtc transportation hub when latter opened anyway, presumed free transfer canceled. of june 2017, connection again slated built.

the station has been portrayed in variety of ways on new york city subway maps since 1932. originally, shown single station called chambers street–hudson terminal. starting in 1948, 2 stations shown, chambers street–hudson terminal express trains continuing brooklyn, , hudson terminal local trains terminating @ station. 1959 map showed 2 stations enclosed in box, single label. 1964 , 1966 maps similar.


on 1972 map, once again appeared single station, label showing chambers street, hudson terminal, world trade center, , path, although hudson terminal office building complex had been demolished time.


on current map published metropolitan transportation authority, shown 2 separate stations free transfer—chambers street (served , c trains) , world trade center (served e trains).


january 23, 2005 fire

around 2:00 p.m. on january 23, 2005, fire destroyed interlocking plant @ chambers street. result, 2 of 3 trains canceled or rerouted, , c service suspended. newspaper articles have blamed fire on homeless person trying keep warm, not confirmed.


the c in brooklyn (east of jay street) replaced extension of v service on weekdays. upper level platforms of eighth avenue line @ 50th street served c @ times except late nights, when train replaces it, , closed; uptown service 50th street via queens boulevard line s connection (e service) lower level of station. additionally, a, uses express tracks on eighth avenue line south of 168th street (the c s northern terminus), switched local @ 145th street, serving 2 local stations served c during day (155th street , 163rd street–amsterdam avenue). used local tracks in brooklyn, serving stations. direct rush-hour trips rockaway park–beach 116th street suspended in favor of always-running rockaway park shuttle.


before fire, on weekday nights 9 p.m. midnight, c service on local tracks north of 59th street; d switched local cover this. switched local service on weekends compensate resulting lack of local service. during rush hour, b trains added, starting january 28.


until morning of january 28, mta rerouted connected ind sixth avenue line, rutgers street tunnel, , ind culver line (the route used regular f service) west fourth street jay street between 10 p.m. , 5 a.m., in order perform critical repairs. last suspended service, rush-hour trips beach 116th street, restored on february 14, 2005; until then, trips required transfer rockaway park shuttle.


initial estimates gave time of 3 5 years restore full service, due rarity of destroyed equipment. later cut 6 9 months bring normal operations. however, c service , 70% of service restored @ 5 a.m. on february 2, 2005, ten days after fire. on april 21, full service restored. however, effects of fire continued 2006 because equipment had not been replaced.
