in 1922, ove arup began work danish firm in hamburg called christiani & nielsen, , in december 1923 moved london office chief engineer. arup married ruth sørensen, known li, on 13 august 1925.
between 1932 , 1937 designed labworth café—a café 2 integrated shelters set on promenade of neighbouring essex seaside resort of canvey island. café exists building solely designed arup. worked structural consultant tecton partnership, notably on penguin pool @ london s regent s park zoo, whipsnade zoo, dudley zoo, construction supervisor villa in heath drive, romford, essex , on highpoint i, highgate (a building later highly critical of). close working relationship arup developed tecton s senior partner berthold lubetkin, proved highly important in development of both men s careers.
he moved next london construction company, j. l. kier & co. in london, director , chief designer 1934–38, , during 1930s worked ernő goldfinger, wells coates, maxwell fry, yorke, rosenberg & mardall , marcel breuer. became member of executive committee of mars group in 1935. in 1938, , cousin arne founded arup & arup limited, firm of engineers , contractors.

before war ove arup on air raid precautions organising committee , advised finsbury council on provision of bomb shelters. during war published number of papers on shelter policy , designs, advocating reinforced concrete mass shelters, rather government policy of dispersing population in small domestic shelters. largely political reasons of recommendations never adopted, although wealthy londoners able build concrete shelters according design.
arup played significant part in design of mulberry temporary harbours used during d-day landings. mulberry harbour type of temporary harbour developed offload cargo on beaches during allied invasion of normandy. sections 2 prefabricated or artificial military harbours taken invading army britain across english channel , assembled off coast of normandy part of d-day invasion of france in 1944.

arup led engineering design of sydney opera house , made construction possible.
in 1946, after dissolving arup & arup ltd, created team of civil , structural engineering consultants. in same year, formed first partnership ronald jenkins, geoffrey wood , andrew young called arup , partners.
a further company, arup associates, formed in 1963 new partnership, body of architects , engineers working on equal basis building designers: engineer ove arup, architects francis pym , philip dowson, , former partners of arup , partners. multi-disciplinary company providing engineering, architectural, , other services built environment. arup said himself ultimately, of arup names resulted in firm called arup.
