the typical tray-type deaerator in figure 1 has vertical domed deaeration section mounted above horizontal boiler feedwater storage vessel. boiler feedwater enters vertical deaeration section above perforated trays , flows downward through perforations. low-pressure deaeration steam enters below perforated trays , flows upward through perforations. designs use various types of packed bed, rather perforated trays, provide contact , mixing between steam , boiler feed water.
the steam strips dissolved gas boiler feedwater , exits via vent valve @ top of domed section. should vent valve not opened sufficiently deaerator not work properly, causing high oxygen content in feed water going boilers. should boiler not have oxygen-content analyser, high level in boiler chlorides may indicate vent valve not being far enough open. designs may include vent condenser trap , recover water entrained in vented gas. vent line includes valve , enough steam allowed escape vented gases provide small visible telltale plume of steam.
the deaerated water flows down horizontal storage vessel pumped steam generating boiler system. low-pressure heating steam, enters horizontal vessel through sparger pipe in bottom of vessel, provided keep stored boiler feedwater warm. external insulation of vessel typically provided minimize heat loss.

as shown in figure 2, typical spray-type deaerator horizontal vessel has preheating section (e) , deaeration section (f). 2 sections separated baffle (c). low-pressure steam enters vessel through sparger in bottom of vessel.
the boiler feedwater sprayed section (e) preheated rising steam sparger. purpose of feedwater spray nozzle (a) , preheat section heat boiler feedwater saturation temperature facilitate stripping out dissolved gases in following deaeration section.
the preheated feedwater flows deaeration section (f), deaerated steam rising sparger system. gases stripped out of water exit via vent @ top of vessel. again, designs may include vent condenser trap , recover water entrained in vented gas. again, vent line includes valve , enough steam allowed escape vented gases provide small , visible telltale plume of steam.
