typhoon ivy formed broad monsoon trough situated near kosrae in eastern caroline islands. tropical depression formed on september 2 system moved towards northwest, next day depression strengthened tropical storm ivy. ivy began rapidly intensify , reached typhoon strength storm passed 130 miles (210 km) east of tinian , saipan in northern mariana islands. on saipan 1 drowning death reported, minor damage reported in northern marianas. typhoon ivy continued on northwesterly path , reached peak strength of 130 mph (210 km/h) on september 7 prior recurving northeast. ivy paralleled southeastern japan coastline , turned extratropical 600 miles (970 km) east of tokyo. typhoon ivy made closest approach honshū, tokyo , surrounding areas buffeted high winds , heavy rains. on 200 landslides reported , 1 person killed 4 others missing.
