Typhoon Yunya (Diding) 1991 Pacific typhoon season
after month without activity in western pacific, weak tropical depression (with winds of 10 knots) developed east of philippines , south of tropical upper tropospheric trough on june 11. located in area of little wind shear, headed southwestward, developing spiral-band outflow , becoming tropical storm on 12th. small central dense overcast (cdo) developed on yunya, rapidly developed, becoming typhoon on 13th paralleled eastern philippines. mid-level ridge forced yunya westward, briefly reached peak intensity of 120 mph (195 km/h) winds on 14th. subsequently, eastward building of subtropical ridge produced unfavorable vertical wind shear weakened yunya minimal typhoon before hitting dingalan bay, luzon on 15th. yunya left luzon minimal tropical storm @ lingayen gulf. turned northward due break in ridge, , dissipated on 17th near southern taiwan due vertical shear.
yunya have been uneventful cyclone, day hit luzon, when colossal eruption of mount pinatubo took place. ash cloud have been dispersed across oceans redistributed on luzon cyclonic winds of typhoon, exacerbating damage caused eruption. water-laden ash fell on evacuated clark air base, rest of luzon, resulting in downed power lines , collapse of flat-roofed buildings. in areas practically raining mud.
yunya exited luzon through lingayen gulf weak tropical storm , turned north toward break in subtropical ridge. system continued weaken due strong vertical wind shear. brushed southern coast of taiwan tropical depression , dissipated before complete full recurvature mid-latitude westerlies. yunya directly caused 1 death flooding , heavy rainfall left.
