1990 model macair merlin gt
the merlin designed in 1986 john burch, intended use in flight training school. burch disappointed ultralights available, in particular inability take off , land in crosswinds. aircraft wing inspired lazair s wing , used same aluminum d cell , foam rib construction techniques , constant-tapered wing planform. first example flew in 1987.
the merlin won pilot s choice award best ultralight @ aircraft sport expo in 1988.
burch formed macair industries in baldwin, ontario produce aircraft. there 2 versions: merlin m50 powered 50 hp (37 kw) rotax 503 two-stroke powerplant , merlin gt , sport 65 version powered 64 hp (48 kw) rotax 532 , later 582. 100 hp (75 kw) honda-based cam 100 engine available option.
in 1991 burch moved production of merlin michigan, usa under new company name, malcolm aircraft. within short time company went out of business , merlin picked new company in 1993 operating under name of merlin aircraft marketed merlin gt. after 3 years company ceased business , rights design acquired blue yonder aviation of indus, alberta continue produce kits. marketing in united states conducted aerocomp (now comp air) time, arrangement has been ended.
blue yonder s current model merlin ez has option of engines: rotax 582 of 64 hp (48 kw), rotax 912ul 80 hp (60 kw) , 912uls 100 hp (75 kw). rotax 618 two-stroke powerplant of 74 hp (55 kw) option until engine discontinued rotax. merlin used testbed aircraft development of hexadyne p60 engine.
the merlin ez uses same foam-rib construction previous models, constant-chord wing clark y airfoil replacing tapered wing. fuselage of 4130 welded steel tube construction, covered in aircraft fabric. factory estimates build times @ 350–450 hours of labour.
