the first examples of azerbaijani literature date late 1200s following mongol conquest , written in arabic script. in 1300s kadi burhan al-din, hesenoghlu, , imadaddin nasimi helped establish azerbaiijani language through poetry , other literary works. ruler , poet ismail wrote under pen name khatā ī (which means sinner in persian) during fifteenth century during 16th century, poet, writer , thinker fuzûlî wrote in azerbaijani translated poems arabic , persian.


in 1875 akinchi (Əkinçi / اکينچی‎ ) ( ploughman ) became first azerbaijani newspaper published in russian empire. started hasan bey zardabi, journalist , education advocate. starting in 1830s several newspapers published in iran during reign of azerbaijani speaking qajar dynasty unknown whether of these newspapers written in azerbaijani.


following rule of qajar dynasty iran ruled reza shah banned publication of texts in azerbaijani. modern literature in republic of azerbaijan based on shirvani dialect mainly, while in iranian azerbaijan based on tabrizi dialect.


mohammad-hossein shahriar important figure in azerbaijani poetry. important work heydar babaya salam , considered pinnacle of azerbaijani literature , gained popularity in turkic-speaking world. translated more 30 languages.


in mid-19th century azerbaijani literature taught @ schools in baku, ganja, shaki, tbilisi, , yerevan. since 1845, has been taught in saint petersburg state university in russia. today azerbaijani language , literature programs offered in united states @ several universities, including: indiana university, ucla, university of michigan, university of texas @ austin, , university of wisconsin–madison.
