neely during later career
in 1948,he again elected senate, beginning third non-consecutive term there. continued serve until death in 1958, after interred in fairmont s woodlawn cemetery.
he new deal democrat , advocate organized labor , civil rights. during terms in senate in 1930s sponsored anti-lynching legislation, such legislation never passed. when returned senate after term governor , term in house of representatives, had lost seniority, although had many friends among senior senators. assigned chairmanship of u.s. senate committee on district of columbia, became preeminent proponent of home rule district, urging government of district of columbia turned on majority of african-american citizens. died in 1958, several years before home rule had sponsored passed both houses of congress.
neely known through political career master orator. in honor, fairmont state university sponsors oratory contest in name every year.
his grandson richard neely, author , politician served chief justice of west virginia supreme court of appeals.
