Physical degradation Conservation and restoration of frescos

fresco in terrace houses in ephesus (6)

signs of cracking , disintegration of paint layers , formation of paint blisters indicative of physical/structural degradation. industrial pollutants contain gases , burning fossil fuels react oxygen , water produce sulfuric acid , nitric acids. these acids convert calcium carbonate (limestone) calcium sulfate becomes soluble in water , forms large crystals within surface layer causing fresco blister , flake off. aside adverse effects of environmental pollutants, fungal growth either on or below surface can cause dislodging of paint layers further contributing physical , structural degradation of frescoes.
