nilotic people constitute bulk of population of south sudan. largest of sudanese nilotic peoples dinka, have many twenty-five ethnic subdivisions. next largest group nuer, followed shilluk.
the nilotic people in uganda include luo (acholi, alur , adhola), ateker (teso , karamojong), lango , kumam.
in east africa, nilotes subdivided 3 general groups:
the plain nilotes: speak maa languages , include maasai, samburu , turkana
the river lake nilotes: joluo (kenyan luo), part of larger luo group
the highland nilotes: subdivided 2 groups, kalenjin , datog
kalenjin: elgeyo, kipsigis, marakwet, nandi, pokot, sabaot, terik , tugen
datog: represented barabaig , small clusters of other datog speakers
