on may 3 area of disturbed area formed south east of mariana islands. day later system strengthened tropical depression, , continued intensify typhoon status 4 days later. system showed annular characteristics on may 11, showing axisymmetric shape. walt reached peak intensity on may 12, before showing distinct eyewall replacement cycle lasting 4 hours late may 13 may 14. when eyewall replacement cycle over, new, larger eye measuring 65 kilometers across formed. walt turned north east, becoming extratropical on may 17, before merging extratropical cyclone north east of japan.
